Considering the story is literally about someone not being able to tell the difference between waking and dreaming I think Jack was just making a reference to how he can’t always tell if something is one of the monsters that hang around the gas station (waking) or if he’s just simply hallucinating from chronic sleep deprivation (dreaming). Definitely could have some deeper meaning tho.
