the whole book series has been centered around Jack, and how he has a fatal disease. it was brought up by Carlos in the first book that Jack doesn't have insomnia, but he rejected the idea and it was never brought back up again until volume 3. Dr. V could have been replaced and lying about Jack not having insomnia but what if he came there with good intentions. But it doesn't explain how Jack doesn't go unconscious like when he was being transported to the hospital and was given a drug to knock him out. also not to mention the twilight anesthesia that he took. also the ending of volume 3 Jack awakens at his counter. is this what Jack does when he loses time? he could just be sleepwalking with his eyes open like Dr. V suggested. I'm legitimately wondering what is going on here and hopefully I can get some answers in volume 4.

I agree with you. I really love this book and uno online which is truly interesting.
My actual theory is that he rests like a dolphin. Dolphins can’t sleep because they’re mammals and would drown. So they rest one half of their brain at a time. I’m no marine biologist, so I probably botched that description.
With people, only the left half of the brain is capable of speech. Here’s where I totally depart from science, but my idea is the left hemisphere is “ME”, i’m the person talking. The right half thinks but never speaks, so I think of it as subconscious. People have two brains, and some people only have one, there‘s a procedure called a hemispherectomy in people with seizures where they remove or somehow disable half of the brain. So what I presume is Jack’s brain halves are tag teaming the job of being Jack.
I’m sure that‘s very uninformative, but I thought it was an interesting question so I took a whack at it.
I think that Jack had something odd to begin with but it might've changed after the whole reset thing. I would find it hard to believe that the Guardian couldn't knock him out, same thing with Brother Riley. I also doubt that the idea that he couldn't sleep made it so the power didn't work, because Jack was able to stay awake after Brother Riley tried to knock him out, even though he was told it was all an illusion he made up. Overall its very ambiguous, intentional or not.
